Even Bodybuilders Need a Break
Bodybuilding is as grueling as any other sport and similar to most athletes who may burn themselves out, bodybuilders need a break from it all at times as well. Can you imagine daily workouts and long-term dieting? Now that takes a lot from any person, especially if you are preparing for competitions.
The SIUC Weightlifting Club’s Mr. and Ms. SIU Bodybuilding and Figure competition showcased 11 men and four women in McLeod Theater. Brendan Lutz, a doctoral student from Ingleside in environmental resources and policy, won both the Mr. SIUC tall class and the overall competition in his first bodybuilding competition. After months of extreme discipline and focus, Lutz said he was looking forward to breaking his diet routine with some ice cream.
“It took 15 weeks of 100 percent strict diet, an hour of cardio every morning at 6 a.m., lifting every day for two hours and getting a diet plan in order and not once straying from it,” Lutz said. “It’s an amazing challenge to yourself to see what you can do.”
“Bodybuilding is basically a good balance between size and definition for the guys,” he said. “For figure, its a little bit different. It’s not women’s bodybuilding. The girls don’t go as much for size as they do in bodybuilding or as much definition. It’s more of a swim-suit model look.”
