Get Pumped with Ian- Calculating your target heart rate
Many people do not understand why knowing your heart rate is important. Well I am here to tell you. Calculating your target heart rate is very important because it is the only way to make sure you are exercising efficiently. Many cardio machines have a heart rate monitor so I suggest that you use that to get a accurate heart rate. You can also measure your heart rate by checking your pulse every 10 minutes but your heart rate may not be as accurate. Your heart rate lower when you check it. You can get a great heart monitor called OMRON HR-100C Heart Rate Monitor. It is priced between $35-$47. You can get a cheaper version at Target and Walmart.
Here is how you calculate your heart rate:
- Calculate maximum heart rate (Max HR): 220-your age= ____ beats/minute (Max HR)
- Calculate your target heart rate in beats per minute:
60% Max HR (beats/minute)_____ X .60 = ____ beats/minute (target heart rate)
65% Max HR (beats/minute)_____ X .60 = ____ beats/minute (target heart rate)
70% Max HR (beats/minute)_____ X .60 = ____ beats/minute (target heart rate)
75% Max HR (beats/minute)_____ X .60 = ____ beats/minute (target heart rate)
80% Max HR (beats/minute)_____ X .60 = ____ beats/minute (target heart rate)
85%Max HR (beats/minute)_____ X .60 = ____ beats/minute (target heart rate)
3. Convert your target heart rate to beats per 10 seconds:
____ beats per minute ÷ 6 = ____ beats/ 10 seconds (target heart rate)
